Troubleshooting

Washer Repair Problems, Explained

What usually causes each problem, and what the fix normally involves. If you recognize yours, call and tell us what you're seeing.

Why is my washer not spinning?

A washer that fills, washes and drains but leaves clothes soaking wet has a spin problem. On top-loaders it’s usually the lid switch or lid lock, a broken drive belt, or on direct-drive Whirlpool-built machines a sheared motor coupler. On front-loaders it’s the door lock, worn shocks that let the drum go out of balance, or a motor control fault. An unbalanced load will also stop a spin on purpose.

Usual fix: Lid switch or door lock, belt, motor coupler, or shocks. We rule out the simple causes before touching the motor or board.

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Roper top-loaders: the lid switch or motor coupler.
  • Samsung front-loaders: UE/UB (unbalanced) codes often mean worn shocks or a load issue.
  • LG: a UE code is balance, an LE code is the motor or hall sensor.

Why is my washer not draining?

Water left in the tub after a cycle means the drain path is blocked or the pump has quit. On front-loaders the drain pump filter catches coins, hair ties and socks, and a full filter is the single most common cause. A kinked or clogged drain hose, a drain pump with a broken impeller, or a lid switch that won’t let the cycle advance are next.

Usual fix: Clean the pump filter, clear or replace the drain hose, or replace the drain pump.

  • LG: OE code. Samsung: 5C or 5E. Whirlpool/Maytag: F9 E1. All mean “couldn’t drain”.

Why is my washer not draining or spinning?

When both happen together, the washer is protecting itself: it won’t spin a tub full of water. Fix the drain and the spin usually comes back. If it drains fine but still won’t spin, work through the spin causes above.

Usual fix: Almost always a drain pump, pump filter or hose. Occasionally a lid switch or door lock that’s blocking both.

Why is my washer leaking?

Where the water shows up tells us where it’s from. Front of a front-loader: the door boot (gasket) is torn or has debris in the fold. Back: inlet hoses or the water inlet valve. Underneath during drain: the drain hose or pump. Underneath during wash: a tub seal or bearing. Suds on the floor usually mean too much or the wrong detergent, not a part.

Usual fix: Door boot, inlet hoses or valve, drain hose, or pump. Tub seal and bearing jobs are bigger and we’ll talk through whether they’re worth it.

What does the error code on my washer mean?

Modern washers tell you what’s wrong if you know the language. Water-fill codes (LG IE, Samsung 4C) mean the machine isn’t getting water: check the taps and inlet screens before anything else. Drain codes (LG OE, Samsung 5C) are the drain section above. Door codes (LG dE, Samsung dC) are the door lock or latch. Motor codes (LG LE) and board codes need a technician.

Usual fix: Note the code and tell us when you call. It usually lets us bring the right part the first time.

What Washer Repair Costs in Lake County

Every visit starts with a diagnostic fee, which is applied to the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on:

  • Top-load vs. front-load: front-loaders take longer to open up
  • Which part failed: a lid switch or pump filter clean is on the low end, a tub bearing or control board on the high end
  • Whether the part is in stock or has to be ordered

Repairs we quote most often

  • Drain pump
  • Lid switch, lid lock or door lock
  • Drive belt or motor coupler
  • Shock absorbers / suspension
  • Water inlet valve
  • Door boot (front-load gasket)
  • Control board

You get the exact price before any work begins. If a repair isn’t worth it, we’ll say so. Call (224) 279-3184 for a quote on your model.

Repair or Replace?

  • Pumps, switches, belts, couplers and valves: repair. These are the common failures and they’re inexpensive parts.
  • Tub bearing or transmission failure on a washer over 10 years old: replacement is usually the better value, and we’ll tell you.
  • A front-loader under 8 years old is worth repairing even for bigger jobs; they’re expensive to replace.
  • If the drum, motor and electronics are healthy, the machine has years left.

Before We Arrive

  1. 01Write down any error code on the display before you clear it.
  2. 02If it’s leaking, turn off the hot and cold taps behind the washer.
  3. 03Don’t force open a locked front-loader door; it’s holding water.
  4. 04Find the model number on the label inside the door or lid.
  5. 05Clear the laundry area so we can pull the washer out.
