Troubleshooting

Dishwasher Repair Problems, Explained

What usually causes each problem, and what the fix normally involves. If you recognize yours, call and tell us what you're seeing.

Why is my dishwasher not draining?

Standing water in the bottom after a cycle is the most common dishwasher call there is. In order of likelihood: the filter is clogged, the drain hose is kinked or blocked, the garbage disposal connection is clogged (or, on a new install, the knockout plug was never removed), the air gap is blocked, or the drain pump has failed.

Usual fix: Clean the filter and drain path, clear the disposal connection, or replace the drain pump or check valve.

  • Bosch: E24 or E25 means a drain fault; it’s very often the filter or the pump cover.
  • Frigidaire and GE: a clogged drain hose or a tired drain pump.

Why is my dishwasher not cleaning the dishes?

Dirty dishes usually mean water isn’t reaching them with enough force or heat. Clogged spray-arm holes, a dirty filter, a weak wash pump, or water that isn’t hot enough (the inlet valve or heating element) are the common causes. Hard water and the wrong detergent make everything worse.

Usual fix: Clean the spray arms and filter, replace the wash pump or heating element, or correct the water supply.

Why is my dishwasher leaking?

Water on the floor comes from the door, the tub or the connections. A worn or dirty door gasket is the usual door leak. A stuck float switch lets the tub overfill. A cracked spray arm throws water at the door seam. Under the sink, the inlet valve or drain hose connection can weep.

Usual fix: Door gasket, float switch, spray arm, inlet valve or hose. We find the source before replacing anything.

  • Bosch: E15 means water has reached the base pan and the dishwasher has shut itself down. The leak has to be found and the base dried before it will run.

Why won’t my dishwasher start, or why does it stop mid-cycle?

No start usually means the door isn’t latching (the latch or switch), the control panel has locked, or a thermal fuse has blown. Stopping partway through points to a stuck float, a failing control board, or a heating element that isn’t reaching temperature so the cycle can’t advance.

Usual fix: Door latch, thermal fuse, float, heating element or control board, in that order of likelihood.

Why is my dishwasher loud?

A grinding or buzzing dishwasher usually has debris in the chopper or pump: a broken glass, a fruit pit, a bit of a label. A squeal or rumble that gets worse over months is a wash-pump bearing. A rhythmic clack is a spray arm hitting something tall in the rack.

Usual fix: Clear the pump and chopper, or replace the wash pump assembly.

What Dishwasher Repair Costs in Lake County

Every visit starts with a diagnostic fee, which is applied to the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on:

  • Which part failed: a filter clean or door latch is on the low end, a wash motor or control board on the high end
  • Built-in and panel-ready units take longer to access
  • Whether a new dishwasher is being installed instead

Repairs we quote most often

  • Drain pump
  • Water inlet valve
  • Door latch or door gasket
  • Float switch
  • Heating element
  • Wash pump / motor
  • Control board
  • New dishwasher installation

You get the exact price before any work begins. If a repair isn’t worth it, we’ll say so. Call (224) 279-3184 for a quote on your model.

Repair or Replace?

  • Pumps, valves, latches and gaskets: repair. Most dishwasher repairs are well under the cost of a new unit plus installation.
  • Wash motor or control board on a dishwasher over 10 years old: replacement is often the better value, and the install is something we do too.
  • Bosch, KitchenAid and other premium built-ins are worth repairing well past 10 years.
  • A tub that has cracked or rusted through is the one failure that always means replacement.

Before We Arrive

  1. 01Pull and rinse the filter in the bottom of the tub; if that fixes a drain problem, you’ve saved a visit.
  2. 02Run the garbage disposal to clear the drain connection.
  3. 03Note any error code on the panel.
  4. 04Find the model number on the label at the edge of the door.
  5. 05Clear the cabinet under the sink so we can reach the connections.

What Neighbors Are Saying

Real Reviews. Real Neighbors.

“Israel was wonderful and worked efficiently! He arrived early in the service window, is very knowledgeable about all different appliances, and answered all of my questions. Also have me great tips about taking care of the appliances going forward! So grateful that we didn’t need to get a new dishwasher and/of dryer, which both broke down the same week. Highly recommend! ”
