Whirlpool Problems, Explained

What tends to go wrong on each Whirlpool appliance line, and what the fix normally involves.

Whirlpool washer not spinning

Whirlpool-family top-loaders fall into two groups. Older direct-drive machines (also sold as Kenmore 110 models) have a motor coupler that shears and a lid switch that wears, and either stops the spin. Newer vertical-modular washers use a shifter actuator that fails and throws F7 E1. Front-loaders stop spinning when the door lock or a drain fault (F21) holds the cycle.

Usual fix: Motor coupler or lid switch (direct drive), shifter actuator (VMW), door lock or drain pump (front-load).

Whirlpool and Maytag dryer not heating

The thermal fuse is the usual cause, and it blows for a reason: a restricted vent made the dryer overheat. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means doing it again in a few months. Heating elements and, on gas models, igniters are next.

Usual fix: Thermal fuse plus a vent airflow check; element or igniter if the fuse is fine.

Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker and cooling problems

Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana refrigerators share ice maker designs and defrost systems. Ice makers stop when the fill tube freezes or the module fails; cooling problems are usually a frosted evaporator from a defrost fault or a failed evaporator fan.

Usual fix: Ice maker assembly or inlet valve; defrost heater, thermostat or fan motor for cooling.

KitchenAid and Whirlpool dishwasher not draining or not cleaning

These dishwashers share a wash and drain system. Standing water is the drain pump, check valve or a clogged chopper; dirty dishes are the filter, spray arms or a weak wash pump. The flashing clean light is the control reporting a fault, most often the heating element.

Usual fix: Drain pump or check valve, wash pump, heating element.

Whirlpool and Maytag oven not heating

Gas ranges: the igniter weakens over time until it can’t open the gas valve. Electric: the bake element or temperature sensor. F2, F3 and F4 codes point at the sensor and board.

Usual fix: Igniter, bake element or temperature sensor.

Is Your Whirlpool Still Under Warranty?

  • Check the purchase date: most manufacturer warranties cover parts and labor for one year, with longer coverage on sealed systems, motors or drums for some models.
  • Find the model and serial number on the appliance label; the manufacturer’s site or support line can confirm what is still covered.
  • If it’s covered, contact the manufacturer first. An independent repair can’t be billed to the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Out of warranty, or covered but you’d rather not wait: call us and we’ll quote the repair upfront.
