Error Codes

GE Error Codes We See Most

GE ranges and wall ovens use F-codes. GE laundry and refrigerators mostly signal problems through behavior or blinking lights rather than codes, so tell us what the appliance does when you call.

By Appliance

GE Problems, Explained

What tends to go wrong on each GE appliance line, and what the fix normally involves.

GE dryer drum not turning, squealing or thumping

GE dryers are known for drum-support wear: the belt, idler pulley, drum bearing and the felt slides and glides at the front of the drum. A squeal is the idler or bearing, a thump is a flat roller or worn slide, and a drum that won’t turn is the belt.

Usual fix: Belt, idler, bearing and slide/glide kit, replaced together.

GE refrigerator not cooling

GE and GE Profile refrigerators warm up when the evaporator ices over (defrost heater, thermostat or main board) or when a fan fails. Many models use a main control board that also drives the fans and damper, so a dead board can show up as several symptoms at once.

Usual fix: Defrost heater or thermostat, fan motor, or main control board.

GE dishwasher not draining

GE dishwashers drain through a check valve and pump that clog with food and glass. A new install that never drained usually has the disposal knockout plug still in place.

Usual fix: Clear the check valve and pump, replace the drain pump, or remove the knockout plug.

GE oven not heating or showing an F-code

F2, F3 and F4 are the temperature sensor and control; F7 is a stuck key; F9 is the self-clean door latch. Without a code, a cold electric oven is the bake element and a cold gas oven is the igniter.

Usual fix: Temperature sensor, control board, bake element or igniter, depending on the code.

GE washer leaking or not spinning

GE top-loaders leak from the tub seal or inlet hoses and stop spinning when the lid switch, belt or clutch wears. GE front-loaders are newer and fewer, and usually report drain or door problems on the display.

Usual fix: Lid switch, belt, clutch, hoses or tub seal.

Is Your GE Still Under Warranty?

  • Check the purchase date: most manufacturer warranties cover parts and labor for one year, with longer coverage on sealed systems, motors or drums for some models.
  • Find the model and serial number on the appliance label; the manufacturer’s site or support line can confirm what is still covered.
  • If it’s covered, contact the manufacturer first. An independent repair can’t be billed to the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Out of warranty, or covered but you’d rather not wait: call us and we’ll quote the repair upfront.
