Microwave Repair in Waukegan, Zion & Beach Park

Not heating, sparking, or won’t start? We repair over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves.

How We Help

Fast, Honest Microwave Repair

An over-the-range or built-in microwave is part of your kitchen, and replacing one means installation work too. In many cases a repair is the simpler fix. We repair microwaves in Waukegan, Zion, Beach Park and across Lake County.

Troubleshooting

Microwave Repair Problems, Explained

What usually causes each problem, and what the fix normally involves. If you recognize yours, call and tell us what you're seeing.

Why is my microwave running but not heating?

Lights on, turntable turning, fan running, food cold. The microwave’s high-voltage side has failed: the magnetron that makes the microwaves, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor, or the transformer. A blown door-switch sequence can also cut power to the magnetron while everything else runs.

Usual fix: Magnetron, diode or capacitor, or a door switch. On a countertop model this often isn’t worth it; on an over-the-range or built-in it usually is.

  • GE and Samsung over-the-range: the magnetron and diode are the common pair.
  • Whirlpool and KitchenAid: door switches that fail out of sequence.

Why is my microwave sparking?

Stop and unplug it. Sparks (arcing) come from a damaged waveguide cover (the small panel inside the cavity), a chipped or worn spot on the interior paint, food debris burning on the cover, or metal in the cavity. Left alone, arcing burns a hole and can take out the magnetron.

Usual fix: Replace the waveguide cover, clean and repair the cavity, or replace the magnetron if it has already been damaged.

Why won’t my microwave start, or why does the door not latch?

Microwaves have two or three door switches wired so the unit can’t run with the door open. A worn latch hook or a switch that’s gone out of order will leave the microwave dead or blow its fuse. A dead display with no response is the fuse, the control board, or the door switches.

Usual fix: Door latch and switches, or the internal fuse and whatever caused it to blow.

Why is the turntable not turning or the keypad not responding?

A turntable that stays still is the turntable motor or the coupler under the glass tray. A keypad that ignores some buttons has a worn membrane or a control board fault; a keypad that ignores everything may just be in child lock.

Usual fix: Turntable motor or coupler; touchpad or control board after checking for a lock setting.

Why is the vent fan or light on my over-the-range microwave not working?

Over-the-range microwaves double as range hoods. A fan that’s stopped or roars is the vent motor or a clogged grease filter; a light that’s out is usually the bulb, sometimes the socket. These are repairable without touching the high-voltage side.

Usual fix: Vent fan motor, filter, bulb or socket.

What Microwave Repair Costs in Lake County

Every visit starts with a diagnostic fee, which is applied to the repair if you go ahead. The repair price depends on:

  • Over-the-range, built-in or drawer: countertop units usually aren’t worth a service call and we’ll say so on the phone
  • Which part failed: a door switch or fuse is on the low end, a magnetron or control board on the high end
  • Whether the unit needs to come off the wall to be serviced

Repairs we quote most often

  • Magnetron
  • High-voltage diode or capacitor
  • Door switches and latch
  • Waveguide cover
  • Turntable motor
  • Control board or touchpad
  • Vent fan motor or light

You get the exact price before any work begins. If a repair isn’t worth it, we’ll say so. Call (224) 279-3184 for a quote on your model.

Repair or Replace?

  • Countertop microwave: replace. A new one costs less than a diagnostic visit plus parts, and we’ll tell you that on the phone.
  • Over-the-range, built-in or drawer: repair is usually the better value, because replacement means installation and often a matching finish.
  • Magnetron failure on a built-in under 8 years old: repair. On a 15-year-old unit, we’ll quote it against replacement.
  • Arcing that has burned through the cavity wall means replacement.

Before We Arrive

  1. 01If it sparked or smelled hot, unplug it and leave it unplugged.
  2. 02Don’t open the cover yourself: the capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even unplugged.
  3. 03Note whether it runs but doesn’t heat, or doesn’t run at all.
  4. 04Find the model number on the label inside the door frame.
  5. 05Clear the counter under an over-the-range unit in case it needs to come down.
