Why is my dryer not heating?
The drum turns, the timer runs, the clothes stay wet. On an electric dryer that’s usually a burned-out heating element or a blown thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat. On a gas dryer it’s the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. A blown thermal fuse is often a symptom of a clogged vent: the dryer overheated because air couldn’t get out.
Usual fix: Replace the element or fuse (electric) or the igniter or coils (gas), and check the vent airflow so the new part doesn’t fail the same way.
- Samsung: heating element and thermal cutoff, often together.
- LG gas dryers: igniter or gas valve coils.
- Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore: the thermal fuse, very often because the vent is restricted.
