Why is my refrigerator not cooling?
A fridge that runs but won’t get cold is almost always an airflow or defrost problem, not a dead compressor. Dust-packed condenser coils, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, or a defrost system that has let the evaporator ice over will all stop cold air from moving. A failed start relay can keep the compressor from running at all.
Usual fix: Replace the fan motor, defrost heater or thermostat, or start relay; clean the coils. A true sealed-system or compressor failure is rarer and we’ll tell you plainly if that’s what it is.
- Samsung and LG French-door models: frost building up behind the back panel from a defrost fault is the most common cause.
- Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore top-freezers: usually the evaporator fan or the defrost timer/control.
